Watch Newcastle take apart Villa at St James Park.
Jon Carew misses a penalty in the first 10 minutes when Villa were dominant but once bad boy Joey Barton, sporting a mustache launched a blistering open field shot from 25 yards out that beat Brad Friedel all ends up, it all crumbled quickly for the Clarets.
Joey Barton, Andy Caroll, and Kevin Nolan quickly overcame the Stephen Ireland led Villa midfield.
Luis Enrique’s bombing crosses from the left channel paid dividends as Caroll elevated himself to head the ball down into the path of Nolan whose attempted header was bolcked by Friedel but he followed up nicely off the rebound to score and send the home side up two.
It was Andy Caroll, another footballer with a hirsute pursuit to then takeover the goal scoaring proceedings. Barton’s cross led to a muffed clearance by Richard Dunne and Caroll was at hand to send it home. Caroll finished off another chance after Wayne Routledge miscued his shot.
Villa’s disarray was complete after another set piece (a corner) was headed across by Mike Williamson for Nolan to score the fifth. Caroll put the exclamation mark as he picked up a pass from Xisco and ran past the ragged Villa defense to score his hattrick.
Chris Houghton celebrated in his low key style and Alan Shearer was at hand to see a happy group of Newcastle players (there seems to be a camaraderie that was missing in the previous Premiership seasons) score this memorable win.
