The headlline could very well read Nadir Belhadj should beware Nadir Belhadj. This most talented wingback, part of Pompey’s FA Cup success is his own worst enemy earning yellows and reds regularly. But he makes up for it with his surging pace down the left and his quality distribution into the box. No one can accuse Belhadj for lacking passion. But it can cut both ways.
The arrival of Belhadj in 2009 proved to be a instant boost for Pompey in their Premiership run and FA progress as he provided Jermain Defoe and Kanu with great service down the left.
He also showed his tough tackling side when they met Liverpool and Belhadj shackled Glen Johnson, a former Pompey player whose foot skills have landed an England spot. Belhadj also scored his first Premiership goal in that match which earned him the respect of Pompey fans.
Belhadj’s 10 minute cameo at the end of the FA Cup rattled the Blues when he sent two dangerous crosses giving Pompey belief that they could pull of extra time. Moments like these are why he rates comparably to Ashley Cole and Gareth Bale in the top category of left wingbacks. He is linked to a number of clubs following Pompey’s relegation.
He might join former Pompey boss Avram Grant at West Ham. The Israeli is a particular admirer of the Algerian and loves the energy that he brings to his game which is why he is keen that David Sullivan splash the cash to bring him to Upton Park.
But Roma and Barcelona are the other clubs who are also competing for his interest.
For Les Fennecs, he is one more talented French Algerian player whose return has benefited his country of origin. Belhadj was part of the French U18 team but like Antar Yahia decided that his Les Bleus opportunities were limited. He debuted for the national team in 2006 and so far has earned 43 caps with four goals scored.
Belhadj will miss Algeria’s opener against Slovenia because of a suspension earned this year in the Africa Cup of Nations when he was sent off against Tanzania. But he will be back for Algeria’s fixture against England and USA. The USA could witness a fascinating duel between the pacy winger and the experienced Cherundolo. Belhadj would like to get his crosses into Abdelkader Ghezzal to do maximum damage or seek Antar Yahia from set pieces.
Belhadj himself believes that Algeria can pull of an upset or two, starting with England. He thinks they are a bit soft defensively.
Les Fennecs will rely on his services because they are missing the impeccable Mourad Meghni, whose technical skills and midfield vision are only second to Karim Ziani. The inexperienced Ryad Boudebouz has been promoted to take his place.
