Edu will be targeting January 3rd as a return date. That is when Rangers meet Celtics in the Old Firm rivalry. He is back in training and he talked a bit about his prospects of finally playing this season.
“Now it’s just a matter of taking it day by day and not looking too far ahead, getting sharp and getting my fitness back. “
His progress will be watched carefully by Bob Bradley who has had to use Ricardo Clark as holding midfielder.
Edu with his European experience should be well above Clark in the depth chart. The ex- Toronto man was put on the pitch last season by Walter Smith with Barry Ferguson suspended and Lee McCulloch injured. He took full advantage of his opportunity to earn a starting spot in Rangers run up to the Scottish title.
For a quick counterattacking US team that has difficulties with ball possession when needed, having a quality holding midfielder is imperative.
Edu is looking forward to working his way back to national duty.
“For me, the World Cup is wide open. I just want to play. I suppose if we drew England I could count on a lot of backing from Scotland. That’s always a good thing.”
If Edu, however, could play left back that would be even more desirable.
Edu also talks about the dissension in the Rangers camp which seems to be affecting their morale and performance. He has also been heartened by the support of the Ibrox fans after his trouble with racism.
