LA Galaxy wants to put Beckham to good use as the ambassador of the club. The LA Galaxy is positioning itself to become the MLS jewel in the crown. This involves a tour in 2008 that will take it to Australia and Asia. The hope is that the tour will open up possibilities of promising Asian and Oz players to join up the LA Galaxy or veterans who are in their twilight of their careers in the European leagues. Players like Mark Viduka, Harry Kewell, Marco Bresciano, and Brett Emerton.
Manager Alexi Lalas had this to say:
“We also have a vision to become not just a premier sports team in the US, but a premier team in the world – a superclub of the standard of Real Madrid and Manchester United. Will that happen overnight? Absolutely not, but it is a long-term process.”
The Glazers, owners of Man Utd have been contemplating just that and there are negotiations with the Anschutz Entertainment Group who own the LA Galaxy to form a West coast franchise of Manchester United with Beckham as player manager. The LA Galaxy would be renamed and it would reap the benefits of having a world class brand name. The formation of Man Utd, the Hollywood version will ensure a pipeline of veteran Man Utd players like Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Paul Scholes who still have a bit of gas in their tank left and want to end their career on a high and lucrative note. Even better Man Utd, Hollywood could become a springboard for the Man Utd youth academy cutting their teeth in a suddenly competitive MLS, who would otherwise have very few opportunities playing for the Man Utd senior squad in the Premiership.
