From data upto October 2024 the current Premier League season had seen just 21 goals scored from its 758 corners with Salah having scored most of them. The 2.8% made it lower than in any other season in the last 10 years. On average only one in 30 corners actually leads to a goal.
Unless the defending team decides to take a conference break when the corner kick is taken.
That’s exactly what happened in the UEFA Nations League quarter-final in Dortmund on Sunday. Germany’s Jamal Musiala tapped the ball into an empty net while Italy’s players seemed to be arguing about who should be doing what.
Joshua Kimmich, however, wasn’t interested in their team meeting. His quick thinking, Musiala’s poaching instincts, and a ball boy who was quite literally on the ball combined to gift Germany a second goal in the 36th minute—turning a simple corner into a comedy sketch and leaving Italy with egg on their proverbial faces.
On the plus side they did manage to come back from being 3 goals down to draw the game.
