The Premier League does not usually comment on match official decisions. However, the governing body was forced to comment on an egregiously obtuse bit of officiating by assistant referee Harry Lennard gifting Christian Benteke his first Liverpool goal and causing Bournemouth’s downfall. Nicely illustrated by a couple of graphics and stick figures, the conclusion was the goal under the new rules should not have stood as it was clearly an “offside offence.”
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) also issued a clarification to all the clubs on the change in the offside rule as laid out by the IAFB. Hopefully, Craig Pawson and Lennard got the memo.
