Benitez era begins inauspiciously with a draw against Sporting Gijon

Not a good day in the office for CR7. The newly promoted Asturians were not overawed by “La Decima” Blancos and Antonio Sanabria had the best look at goal with his header bouncing off the underside of the crossbar and the ball falling a measly few millimetres short of crossing the goal line completely. Rafa Benitez’s side huffed and puffed but Gijon’s defense and their goalie Ivan Cuellar proved tough customers. Their constant pressing threw their opponents rhythm off sync. Cristiano Ronaldo in particular was frustrated in several bids to get on the scoring sheet.

After the match, Benitez bemoaned, “the lack of precision in the final pass and accuracy on goal.”
