Jose Mourinho was essentially run out of Real Madrid because in part, in his fevered imagination he was the target of a UEFA conspiracy which would never allow Real Madrid to win as long as he was the coach. Old time Madridistas who were used to watching quality had to endure the farce of trench warfare on the pitch, grim, batten down the hatches football with a coach contesting every decision which went against the club. A proud club now forced to play the victimization card all crystallized in that infamous 2011 Supercopa second leg against Barca with Mourinho poking the late Tito Vilanova in the eye. Off the pitch, Mourinho regularly insulted on the Real Madrid media, players in the club, Pep Guardiola, the Barca way of playing football. Football became a gladiator sport with Mourinho seemingly focused on the maximum amount of bloodletting.
Back at Chelsea, he’s found a more receptive, forgiving audience in a club historically at the edges of the top league. The Pensioners had last won the league title in 1955 much before Roman Abrahamovich poured in his millions as balm. Mourinho won them their first title in half a century. His preferred destination was Liverpool, a club he believed was more suited to his ambitions but Rafa Benitez was given the job. A slight he’s never forgotten, nor forgiven. When Mourinho left Chelsea under a cloud, the former translator to Bobby Robson and assistant to Louis Van Gaal at Barcelona made a vow. He would win a title in every league which he coached.
When he won La Liga in 2012, his ambition was realized even as Real Madrid, his club, paying the price hemorrhaged goodwill. As Mourinho’s tenure became tenuous, Man Utd was favoured as the next destination with Sir Alex Ferguson stepping down and with whom he had a very convivial relationship. In fact, the legendary coach often talked about Mourinho as his successor. But the Portugese was turned down as the Utd board was adamant in their dislike of his polarizing personality. Instead, they turned to David Moyes on Ferguson’s recommendation. The decision absolutely crushed Mourinho, who was reported to have broken down on hearing the news.
Such rejection even as he won every title fuels Mourinho’s finely honed sense of persecution. Every coach talks about building a system providing a side with success, Mourinho accomplishes this by destroying. The dialectic to the Barcelona philosophy can be successful. He’s Shiva in the holy Trinity of Hindu gods while everyone plays Vishnu, the creator.
So far, this season he’s gone after Arsene Wenger, Manuel Pellegrini, Cristiano Ronaldo, and now Rafa Benitez after the present Real Madrid coach’s wife engaged in some light hearted banter. Which as guttersniping goes, is as low as you can go. Mourinho comes off as sexist and sizeist. The US presidential election was kicked started by the Donald’s aka F*ckface Von Clownstick’s bilious demagoguery. But I say to you. You know nothing, Donald Trump! When Mourinho retires, hire him as your campaign manager.
