Abby Wambach charging ahead volleyed a corner from Megan Rapinoe past Precious Dede just before the finish of the first half. That was the difference. The Nigerians fought hard in the first half with Julie Johnston denying Asisat Oshoalah with a very timely tackle in the 24th minute. The defender’s goal was also ruled offside, a controversial decision.
The USA cranked up the intensity in the second half but Precious Dede denied Alex Morgan twice and Rapinoe. Morgan was making her first start in this World Cup and her impact was unmistakable. The Super Falcons finally lost flight after Sarah NNodim already on a booking received her red after she brought down Sydney Leroux.
The win ensured the USA topped Group D and they will play Colombia in the Round of 16. The start of this WWC campaign has been slow, goals hard to come by, and without Solo and Rapinoe putting in a shift, the USA would have had a real struggle. However, against Nigeria they finally looked more comfortable playing through the midfield without relying too much on the long ball to Wambach. Encouraging signs.
As for the Nigerians, they will definitely do better in future. They are a young side, stacked with players of great attacking instincts and pace with Oshoalah, Ordega, and Okobi. They need more midfield organization and more defensive discipline. Precious Dede is a fine goalkeeper but at 35 years of age, this might be her last world cup.
