Bobby Wood is the man of the moment!
A brilliant 88th minute strike by Bobby Wood stunned powerful Germany. The striker latched onto a Brad Evans pass and wheeled past Shkodran Mustafi with a clever turn, checked, and curled an unstoppable shot with his left foot past Ron Robert Zieler. A well deserved winner with the USA clearly in the ascendancy in the second half with Michael Bradley orchestrating and De Andre Yedlin, Gyasi Zardes, and Mix Diskerud proving elusive opponents for the German defense.
Germany’s early opener was scored by Mario Gotze, the forgotten man in Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich, swept the ball past Brad Guzan after Patrick Herrmann, weaved his way past four US defenders down the right, picked him out in the centre. In the 40th minute Bradley spotting Diskerud on the left relayed a superbly measured diagonal which the midfielder chested down neatly and then scissored the ball past Zieler for the equalizer.
The Germans were left to rue some close chances in the first half with Gotze coming close to adding a second. Sami Khedira, now a Juventus man, hit the crossbar in the last minute. But this was clearly the USA’s day as a pumped up Juergen Klinsmann savoured the win against his former national side.
With this victory, the USA have managed to dismantle Europe’s best having beaten Netherlands last week.
