Argentina through a 56th minute Sergio Aguero header off a Javier Pastore cross won the showdown between these two South American heavyweights. The Albiceleste had a tough time breaking down the Copa’s toughest defense led by Diego Godin and Arevalo Rios in the first half despite having the majority of possession. The Uruguayans on the other hand were very cautious and continued to park the bus.
Aguero’s goal changed all of that and the Uruguayans came out of their shell and tested Sergio Romero a lot more in the second half. Diego Rolan’s control let him down and he could only scoop the ball following Sergio Romero’s parry after a fiercely struck shot. Romero also stopped Abel Hernandez in the 90th minute and then saw Godin’s header sail over the bar following a cross into the box. Argentina and Paraguay now top Group C with Uruguay just one point behind with three. Jamaica is still mathematically in it even after two defeats.
