On May 21st 2011, Real Zaragoza played their final match away to Levante in need of three points to save them from relegation to the second division. They escaped miraculously with a 2-1 win as Gabi scored a brace. Now that result is being investigated for match fixing by the Liga’s anti-corruption squad with 20 players from both squads summoned for their testimony. Some of them have already been charged but their names have not been disclosed.
Zaragoza that night started Ander Herrera, who was one of Utd’s high priced summer acquisitions. He is not the only Premier League player linked with match fixing as Swansea’s Jefferson Montero also came on for Levante. Both of them could be called in for questioning.
Of course, these allegations are being denied. Zaragoza put out the following statement on their website:
“Following the reports that have emerged regarding the ongoing investigation into the Levante-Real Zaragoza match played on 21st May 2011, Real Zaragoza would like to communicate that it has absolutely no knowledge of anything connected to the allegations. The Club is at the Ministry of Justice’s disposal and will cooperate with any requests made”, the statement reads.
Not news Utd wanted with their defensive end being given a full cavity search by Leicester City last weekend.
