Andres Escobar,a national hero in Colombia,scored an unfortunate own goal against USA in the World Cup in 1994.
He was slated to a move to Inter Milan after the World Cup.
Days later he was found in a nightclub car park with 6 bullet wounds.
All sorts of unverifiable claims were made in the wake of Andres Escobar’s murder: that it was a punishment for his error against the United States, that drug cartels had lost thousands of dollars betting on Colombia to qualify for the second round, that the killer had shouted “Goal!” with each shot. The truth is that the two events may have been entirely unconnected.
It’s a bad World Cup memory anyway…
