In the two first leg semi final games the four best teams in Europe managed one goal between them. Real Madrid beat Bayern Munich by a solitary early Benzema goal. The rest of the game was not as dull as ditchwater as the other semifinal between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid.
There Mourinho played his classic 8- 1- 1 formation in which the sole purpose of the Chelsea players was to defend their goal to the bitter end and hope that Atletico Madrid might score a self goal at the other end out of sheer frustration.
That they didn’t – which meant that the game ended with the score reading no goals each.
Real Madrid closed ranks after the Benzema goal and more or less emulated Chelsea in a display of dour, dogged defence.
Bayern for once could not do much even though they had far greater possesion of the ball.
Two golf first leg semifinals would have been more fun to watch.
