Old Trafford was the venue of the 2010 Soccer Aid match which raises money for UNICEF to help children all around the world.
England led by Robbie Williams and managed by Harry Redknapp took on the Rest of the World captained by Michael Sheen (last seen playing Brian Clough in The Damned United) and managed by Kenny Dalglish.
The match ended in regulation time, 2-2 with goals from Teddy Sheringham and Jamie Redknapp for England and for the ROTW, Joe Calzaghe and Sami Hyppia keeping pace. In the penalty shootout, Woody Harrelson came up with the winner beating Jamie Theakston.
Harrelson continues a trend of US showmen flirting with the global game. Many are expected in SA. Drew Carey was one of the first. He is a minority owner of the Seattle Sounders and has appeared in a number of ads featuring Landon Donovan and Tim Howard for the USMNT.
England: Robbie Williams (captain), Paddy McGuinness, Bradley Walsh, Jamie Theakston, Ricky Hatton, Damian Lewis, Olly Murs, Jonathan Wilkes, Dominic Cooper, Ralf Little, Rupert Penry-Jones (injured), Ben Shephard
Legends: David Seaman, Alan Shearer, Teddy Sheringham, Jamie Redknapp, Martin Keown, Nicky Butt
Manager: Harry Redknapp
Rest of the World: Wales Michael Sheen (captain),James Kyson Lee, Gordon Ramsay, Brian Lara, Patrick Kielty, Nicky Byrne, Shane Filan, Mike Myers, Joe Calzaghe,Gethin Jones, Woody Harrelson, Simon Baker
Legends: Jens Lehmann, Henrik Larsson, Zinedine Zidane, Ryan Giggs, Luís Figo, Sami Hyypiä
Manager: Kenny Dalglish
Two things (tongue in cheek): If Liverpool fans were looking for a sign, it was Dalglish still seems to have what it takes to coach. The other was of course, England going down on penalties. Oye! A World Cup omen?
