Michael Dawson joins the England squad
This World Cup is already reeling with some marquee names missing either through injuries or non-inclusion.
Rio Ferdinand’s World Cup hopes ended after he suffered substantial knee ligament damage following a challenge by Emile Heskey. The 31 year old had scans and two separate medical opinions, both confirming that it was impossible for Ferdinand to continue playing.
“Everyone with the squad is very disappointed and sorry for Rio,” said England manager Fabio Capello.
Michael Dawson who was preparing to go on holiday got the emergency call up. He had been cut by Capello after not playing a single minute in any of the friendlies. A decision roundly criticized by Harry Redknapp who felt that Capello had padded his numbers and was not serious about the central defender or Scott Parker.
Ferdinand’s departure will set off a fresh round of criticism of Capello. He can be accused of taking an unnecessary risk knowing fully well the Man Utd’s central defender’s physical fragility.
Capello also faces a tough decision as to who will partner John Terry. He has Matthew Upson, Ledley King, Jamie Carragher, and now Michael Dawson to choose from.
Since King is also an injury risk with a long history of knee problems and Dawson is inexperienced, the two options are Upson and Carragher. Of the two, Upson inspires little confidence with his regular defensive breakdowns while Carragher if not speedy is fairly solid and capable of snuffing out a threat.
