Amidst the hum of the ever incessant vuvuzelas, Bafana Bafana was able to overcome Colombia through Katlego Mphela’s 58′ minute penalty.
That was actually how the match played out, three controversial decisions and three penalties. Check them out. In each case, the referee Langat Samwel might have got it wrong.
Tiko Modise’s first penalty was saved by David Ospina but it was retaken because the Colombian goalie was adjudged to have moved before the shot. Mario Yepes and Ospina protesting the decision vociferously.
This time Modise did not miss. Colombia equalized when Gustavo Ramos was brought down in the box and Giovanni Moreno converted the resulting spot kick. Bafana Bafana went ahead for good with Mphela’s penalty. Then they saw out a Colombian comeback through some good goalkeeping by Moneeb Joseph.
Steven Pienaar and Benni McCarthy, the Premiership big stars made their appearances to raucous applause from the 70,000 strong crowd.
