The Gunners enjoyed a lot of possession in the first half ably marshaled by Aaron Ramsey. But there was no real momentum. The second half was a complete change as Kyle Bartley’s whiffed tackle enabled Oscar Gonzalez to pass the ball to Leonardo.
The Brazilian blew by Mikael Silvestre and Song. I thought Fabianksi could have done better, timing his run a bit late and allowing Leonardo to coolly slot the ball between his legs. The other option would have been to stand his ground for Leonardo to do all the work.
Carlos Vela and Walcott missed a couple of good chances to score. Lets face it- they are still far from the goalscoring threat we need. Vela especially seems to have this vexed problem of not finishing off simple chances. Ramsey’s clever little pass in the box found the Mexican but he shot the ball straight at the goalkeeper.
Ramsey was the Gunners pick, bustling in midfield, creating chances and darting up to try and score himself.
Wenger in a post match interview:
“We were positive and overall I am disappointed because we lost the game but proud of the attitude of our young players.”
” I expected to suffer more than we did tonight. Unfortunately we got caught straight away coming out of the dressing room on the counter attack and after we had two clear-cut chances to come back and then it became more difficult. Olympiacos played on their experience, played very safe and we lacked a little bit of composure in the final third to come back.”
On Ramsey:
“He had a good presence, gave good balls and had a good work rate in midfield.”
