As another English Premier League comes to a close, with Manchester United winning their 18th league with a game to go, we look at 5 matches that make the Premier League one of the best to watch. (in no order) Let’s start.
1. Arsenal 4-4 Tottenham
Scoring 4 goals at The Emirates on its own is something to be proud of, scoring 2 in the last minute and one from 44 yards is even more special, not to mention that this match is a North London rivalry match – emotions are high, the tempo is just a little faster. David Bentley, a failed Arsenal player scoring from more than 40 yards was a sign of things to come; Arsenal’s deadly counter attacks with 2 set-piece goals due to comedy goalkeeping from Gomes, this match had everything, oh, and 2 goals in the 90th minute from Spurs just to finish it off.
2. Man Utd 1-4 Liverpool
In a season where Manchester United equalled Liverpool’s record of 18 league titles, Liverpool had their own little success by crushing Man Utd at their own stadium, the so-claimed fantastic defence Manchester United had was totally crushed by Torres and Gerrard – Torres humiliating Vidic on a number of occasions. Not yet however was the humiliation complete, like watching two fat blokes run, watching Andrea Dossena outpace John O’Shea in the race of turtles and lobbing the rooted Van Der Sar completed the humiliation of Manchester United.
3. Manchester United 5-2 Tottenham
Down 2-0, at the most important part of the season – Liverpool were extremely close to Man Utd, and being outplayed by Tottenham, Man Utd turned on the attack force and put 5 past the Spurs, a controversial penalty to start the comeback, but none-the-less a brutal second half by Manchester United.
4. Liverpool 4-4 Arsenal
Liverpool’s title hopes hanging by a thread, Arsenal needing points to confirm a spot for Champions League football, after a dull first half in which Fabianski was tested many times by Liverpool, a rare mistake by Mascherano allowed Arsenal to pass the ball in the net in a super move containing Nasri, Fabregas and Arshavin. The signs were there – both defences had cracks, both teams were looking to attack, who could have predicted 8 goals however? Torres scored 2 super goals, one a header and the other a little turn followed by a snap shot, showing the versatility of the Spanish striker, however it was Arshavin who stole the highlights with 4 goals, the last possibly the best – Theo Walcott running with the ball after a corner, seeing little Arshavin sprint into the screen from out of nowhere and finish with super composure was reminiscent of Michael Thomas scoring in 1989, in the same kit at the same stadium.
5. Arsenal 1-2 Hull
Usually when teams beat Arsenal – they suck out all of Arsenal’s creativity and usually win in a defensively-sided manner, but Hull’s fairytale, while it lasted, was remarkable, travelling to The Emirates and outplaying the Gunners of the pitch is rare – Hull not only did this, but they showed a clinical edge to their game which has gone missing of late, Geovanni scoring a screamer from 25 yards was just one of the things that Hull need to do tomorrow to stay in the Premier League.
