  1. I thought the back line of the US U-20 side looked mighty shaky against Austria. They had trouble clearing balls that should have been easily cleared. I also thought they too readily conceded throw-ins on many loose balls by kicking them out of play, rather than trying to retain posession. Seitz in goal did not inspire confidence, either. Sure, it was wet, but he failed to control two easy shots on goal, from distance, one of which led to the first Austrian goal. One of his best saves was with his face (ouch).
The US attack looked better, but still lacked either a good finish or a good through-ball when something developed. They were just a little off. They do appear to have some talent on the attack. I’m encouraged by that. 🙂
Thoughts, anyone? I haven’t found any analysis on this match.

  2. Hi there – First post.
I think the US lost composure after Austria equalized, which you can pretty much chalk up to inexperience. That’s what’s great about these youth tourneys – teams can lose or regain their shape and confidence in an instant, thereby making every game almost impossible to predict.
I think the future is bright for the US though, even with this disappointment. Altidore is clearly a composed finisher, Adu is an American Cruyff and Szetela is an effective attacker and defender. If the USA had a real weakness at this tournament, it was perhaps their reliance on Adu to start almost every attacking play. Not that that is a terrible thing, but it became clear that when he was having to track back to his own 18 and win the ball and then run all the way to the other end to try and score, quality play developing was unlikely. I thought Bradley had a disappointing game, as did Zizzo and Beltran. Seitz never should have played.
