John Terry or Steven Gerrard?

Steve McLaren has to decide on who is the best to lead England. John Terry or Steven Gerrard. This after years of having someone like Becks who was invisible on the field and never was much of a captain. You can argue his utility as a player but I have a feeling that England has forgotten how valuable a captain can be. England’s best captain; Bobby Moore, in 1966, the last time they won the World Cup.
Steven Gerrard: The best English midfielder and possibly the best in the business. Even Jose Mourinho recognizes that. Gerrard has been outstanding and has scored in all four Cup finals that he has played in. None more so than the 2005 Champions final between AC and Liverpool. The greatest comeback with Liverpool down 3-0. Gerrard started it all with that great first goal. Liverpool beat AC on PKs. Then there was the FA Cup final this year in which West Ham found out that no lead is safe when there is a Gerrard on the field. Gerrard’s missile at the end of extra time was measured at approximately 70 miles an hour and it took a second to travel that distance. West Ham fell on PKs. He scored 2 goals in this World Cup where he victimized Shaka Hislop again when the T&T goalie looked like he was going to pull off another miracle draw all by himself. I don’t know how best to describe his character but unrelenting is a good start.
John Terry: The one player that Chelsea probably will hold onto for dear life. Chelsea has won two successive English titles with Terry at the helm. He is a tough, no nonsense guy, great tackler, and not afraid to have a go at goal too. His strength must be his extra-ordinary presence of mind. The football world cannot get enough of that goal line save that Terry pulled off when Stern John’s header was all but in. Terry was the only English player to make the FIFA World Cup team. One of the matches I saw was the Chelsea vs West Ham game this year in which Maniche was sent off and Chelsea were down by a goal within the first 10 minutes. Terry marshalled his players and had Drogba coming back all the way on defence. By the time the match was over, the Hammers were on life support. John Terry has a blue collar mentality in a team built on oil money.
John Terry or Steven Gerrard as captain? England will be well served with both. The problem is we can only pick one.

  1. A midfield general is probably better than a defensive general. Otherwise there is no difference between the two. England is fortunate to have both

  2. WELL SINCERELY SPEAKING
I THINK GERRARD SHOULD BE THE CAP. COS HE HAS BEEN IN THE TEAM FOR A LONG TIME. TERRY IS JUST NEW TO THE SETUP. AND I ALSO THINK THE CAPTAIN SHOULD BE SOMEONE THAT CAN WIN GAMES WHICH GERRARD CAN DO.
TERRY CAN BE THE ASST CAPTAIN.

  3. For me, it’s gotta be Stevie G, you can’t deny JT’s commitment but the position Stevie plays in means that his influence over the team as a whole would be far greater… Plus when you consider his relationship with arguably Englands most talented player: Wayne Rooney; you can see that if anyones gonna be able to harness that kind of talent in the right way on the football pitch it’s gotta to be Stevie G, Becks was useless at it Rooney didnt give him the time of day most of the time you’d see Steven Gerrard telling him to calm down, more often than not he’d listen… Then of course there are those moments when all hope is lost when every single person on this planet let alone the stadium are convinced it’s all over, theres no way there is gonna be a turn around….. cue Mr Steven Gerrard who single handedly shattered a brave West Ham team when no one on this planet thought it would be possible from that range…. and ofcourse theres the Champions League Final 2005…
    It’s got to be Stevie.

  4. umm im a red and would love to SG get it, that said JT is awesome and would do an equal job, we are indeed a lucky nation to have two quality and such fine players. lets hope toegther with the new gaffer we can aspire to great things our team is capable of!

  5. It should be Steven gerrard.
However, the Southern press will assure it is John Terry.
It doesnt matter either way though, England wont win nothing with McClaren in charge anyway – and thats a guarantee.

  6. Both: never say Die… motivate/marshall other players.
    lead by example.
Terry: can see everything from the back.
Gerrard: will drive the team forward.. and honestly wot is that england lacks… somebody to get the team by the scruf of the neck and MAKE them PLAY!
even if Gerrard is captain, Terry will still marshall the defence… but will Gerrard have the authority to do wot he does best if terry is handed the armband… for that reason i go with Gerrard

  7. Though Terry is without a doubt the soul of Chelsky, Stevie is the heart beat as well as the passion of LFC. When you compare the difference in budget between the two clubs and then judge the players, then it has to be Stevie as he has achieved what he has without the help of billions! It’s the same reasoning when comparing Lampard and Stevie, until Lampard dose it when surrounded by lesser players he will always be second to Stevie.

  8. Think about it fellas, SG is proven in cup competitions and JT can do it in the league.
We’re always saying how a cup tie is a different animal to a league tie. Now ask yourself this question – What kind of competions do England play in? CUPS! It’s so bleedin’ obvious. Stevie G!!!!
JT is already captain of the defence but clean sheets don’t win matches. Only forward play can do that and SG needs the license to maraud and lead.

  9. i think steven gerrard should become the next captain bacause he deserves the chance.john terry dosen’t deserve to become captain he plays for chelsea is the champions of the premiership.also he didn’t score in the world cup so if he becomes captain and can’t score then he could let the team down…

  10. hello I am from kosova,,, and I LIKE LIVERPOOL, AND FOR ME LIVERPOOL IS THE BEST. BEY FROM FISNIK BUJA FROM KOSOVA.

  11. Stevie G has to captian…JT is an tough defender and great organizer but gerrard is also a tough defended and great organizer but he also produces important goals so if/when england is down one man at the end of the world cup 2010 who do you expect to provide the spark..john terry or gerrard

  12. i think steven gerrard should be cap becouse hes realy go at maneageing the club and and play well.Terry is a good player becouse hes a good defender and he also has some foward ratings but i realy think that if england has gerrard as ther captain they can win the wold cup. please let gerrard becom captain cuz hes a good midfileader. thank you.
