You know the ESPN pundits must be reading Soccerblog. In our discussions we discussed the issue of sending talented US players abroad to learn from the tougher European leagues. Well, the panel of ESPN eggheads just agreed. Wynalda is laying the blame squarely on Arena, saying it is easier to replace one person than the whole squad.

“Onyewu- I’m just large, if I ran you over I’m sorry” – Wynalda.
rotfl…
Arena is a good coach for the under-twenty team, he can surely nurture young talents and he has already proved that. He is really pretty ordinary tactically, and he does not seem to have any alternative plans. He relies too much on the reputation of the players , not on the current form. McBride was really off , Eddie Johnson should have played from the beginning. Dempsey should have been in the first match. Reyna was no good for a central midfielder.
Do not get Klinsman, get somebody like Hiddink or Scholari. Klinsman has no track record of coaching. Get a real coach. Keep Arena as a coach of under-20 team.

I expected usa to do better. After all they’ve been to the world cup on several occassions.
Can you tell me why usa calls the game soccer instead of football. the game is played with the feet. The entire world calls it football. So why soccer? ????
Coach arena talks too much. He should know by now that every team has suffered in the hands of a wrong judgment of a refree before.
it hurts but you have to move on. A draw will have pushed Ghana in anyway.
Just put this behind you and work hard next time.
Eric is way out of line, saying it was all Arena’s fault is unbeleivable. No matter what formation you are in you still have to score goals.
Eric is out of line? That is laughable. He voiced his disagreement with the coaching decisions, nothing wrong with that. The formation ahs a lot to do with scoring philosophy, so yeah….it affects scoring. If you are not playing your best goal scorers now…in the formation that best suits them….you will not get results. EJ and McBride both should have been playing…Donovan should have been playing is style from the get go….not the style of Reyna who likes slow an attack down…there was no aggressiveness in this offense we saw….due to the offensive philosphy that Bruce Arena set out…
if the u.s. is going to place so much hope in donovan, they should have played a formation suited to his style. like a 4-4-2 with him as an attacking midfielder where he can run at defenses and play in behind two forwards
Guys-
The US was overmatched by all three teams. We dont have one player that can compare to Totti, Nedved, or Essien. Thus, to compensate for this deficiency, Bruce opted for a defensive 4-5-1 formation that relied on counterattacks.
The US hit two posts and had one goal called back for offside interference. We had chances, players just couldn’t convert.
Also, individual player mistakes, not formations, led to soft opening goals. Against the Czechs, the first goal was because 1) Keller punted the ball to no one, 2) Lewis was caught downfield, 3) Gooch was indecisive, 4) Pope was not strong enough against Koller and 5) Keller did not even attempt to punch out the cross.
Ghana’s first goal was because 1) Dempsey attempted a backpass of five feet, 2) Dolo was caught upfield, 3) Conrad was out of position, 4) Reyna was indecisive, and 5) Keller did not come off his line.
Do we sit all these players? Who’s left?

wynalda’s a jealous idiot, he called ronaldo fat bloated and overrated, hes the world cups all time leading goal scorer, is that overrated? maybe wynalda the soccer analyst is jealous and overrated.
I feel that the USA soccer team needs to start playing more friendly matches against European Teams in Europe. Forget the Gold Cup – winning it is not going to make them more stronger – no offence but playing teams like guatemala are not going to develop the team to play the likes of England Italy or France.
Just look at their record in Europe it is very poor, even if they play in Europe and lose there is no shame in it becasue they would have learnt alot.
Against the Czech Republic we were so poor, physically we were very weak and a lot of star players underachieved.
US Soccer can definetly get better and I can’t wait to see the day when we are actaully feared by European opposition because in all honesty alot of them see us as a joke.
